Screamin' Jay was one of the first real showmen of the rock 'n roll era. The cat brought pure entertainment to the stage that, as you point out Susu, you either loved it or hated it. I'm mad about his version of "I Love Paris"! That was sweet! :D
Yes I like him! ("I put a spell on you") has been made by many others also, but the original is of course the best. Do you know his "Constipation Blues' (together with Serge Gainsbourg)?

I don´t know him enough to have either love or hate. I think about it.
